An oasis in the city

ARTICLE APPEARING IN THE TRAVEL MAG – MARCH 2016

Sweeping green lawns, quaint thatched roofs and the charismatic homeliness of a countryside abode. You certainly wouldn’t expect to find a place like this just a stone’s throw from the urban hubbub of Sandton. But One Sandra Guest House shrugs off Johannesburg’s frenetic grip, offering visitors a charming escape from the city’s sea of concrete, cars and chaos.

Situated at the start of Sandra Avenue, this comfy B&B has a prime location no more than a 10 minute drive from the variety of business, leisure and entertainment venues in the area. Pass through the gates into the grounds, however, and city-induced frazzledness is immediately transformed into pleasant serenity. The property is beautifully maintained, with its pride and joy being the landscaped gardens, awash with rose bushes, flowering trees and expansive lawns.

With white paint, pitched gables, wooden window frames and thatched roofs, the buildings have a strong Cape Dutch flavour. In fact, you would be forgiven for thinking you’re at a wine farm in Stellenbosch: another unexpected but delightful departure from Joburg’s fifty shades of grey.

The rooms are uniquely decorated and mirror the countryside feel of the gardens. Under the rustic feel of thatch, guests will enjoy neat and comfortable beds, handpicked ornaments and facilities such as tea/coffee stations, televisions, fridges, hair dryers, heaters and fans. Wireless internet is available for people who appreciate life’s modern conveniences.

Personalised service is one of the outstanding features of a stay here. Rooms are serviced daily and laundry and ironing services are available on request. Kate and Jack are exceptionally hospitable hosts who make sure that mornings are ushered in with a generous, top-quality Full English and Continental breakfast, served in the cheery dining area. After topping up your stomach, you can make use of the transfer service to take you to your business or leisure appointments in Woodmead . Guests lucky enough to not have any commitments can kick back on the verandah, sipping on a cold drink or more suitably, a glass of fine wine.

At the end of the day, you’re more than welcome to enjoy a braai at the guest house’s well-equipped barbeque area. Jack and Kate can also rustle up a fabulous home-cooked dinner for you on request, or recommend a number of excellent restaurants within a few minutes’ drive.

All-in-all, One Sandra is a soulful retreat for Joburg visitors who are looking for a venue that is close to the city, but far from the impersonality of a sky-scraping hotel. It’s exactly what you want after the inevitable trials and tribulations of a busy city day.
